Since 2009, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) have been pushing to activate known CO2 mitigation actions. The Kyoto Protocol is of particular significance as it aims to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by at least 5% below 1990 levels, by 2012.
