Eco Minerals - A New Global Source

The commissioning of RockTron’s first fly ash (PFA) beneficiation plant in the UK heralds the introduction of a whole new source of environmentally-coherent industrial minerals with a wide range of commercial uses.

Using proprietary processing and manufacturing technology, RockTron is able to address the global problem of dealing with millions of tonnes of fly ash waste that is currently treated as a waste stream and stored in lagoons or land-filled at coal-fired power station sites around the world.

The RockTron process typically treats 100% of the stored fly ash as well as handling fresh arisings generated by the power station, immediately reducing the cost and requirement to store fly ash on-site. Over time the fly ash stockpile is processed into valuable eco-minerals enabling the storage site to be remediated and returned to its former state.

While the initial raw material is fly ash, the RockTron beneficiation process transforms the ash into a wide range of distinctive materials and minerals with some very special characteristics and properties. In particular the spherical nature of the alumino-silicate and magnetite particles is a key differentiation and advantage for many industrial production processes.

The range of resulting products comprises significant volumes of :

Cleaned cenospheres for use in applications such as coatings and composites.

Recovered carbon for use as fuel in the power station and as reductants and activated carbons.

Typically removing 98% of the carbon radically improves the performance and properties of the high volume of alumino-silicate materials which have applications as mineral fillers and cementitious constituents.

The RockTron process also recovers significant quantities of iron in the form of spherical magnetite.

The RockTron beneficiation process provides environmental and economic solutions for coal-fired power stations, a sustainable source of mineral fillers from legacy global waste stockpiles, a major source of future CO2 reductions for the cementitious industries, a unique source of spherical particles for advanced materials development and a new source of recovered carbon for power, chemical and environmental applications.
